Cocoa

Six million smallholders are responsible for producing 95 percent of the cocoa grown worldwide. Most cocoa farmers have to get by on less than two dollars a day per family member. This simply makes cocoa cultivation unprofitable for many smallholder farmers. Consequently, many young people decide against taking over their parents' cocoa plantations. Instead, they leave their villages and head for the towns and cities. These trends are responsible for the dwindling supplies of high-quality cocoa on the world market. Climate change is making matters worse by reducing the size of potential cocoa growing regions.
To address these serious challenges, Chocolats Halba is exploring new ways of sourcing its most important raw material. It has set itself the following goals:

  • Securing the quality and quantity of cocoa that Chocolats Halba needs in the long term
  • Making cocoa cultivation more attractive to smallholder farmers – Chocolats Halba is committed to  improving farmers' long-term standard of living
  • Ensuring that cocoa cultivation is ecologically sustainable
